Career Questions: Where Are You Going? How Will You Get There?

This talk explores the question of how we work out what we are meant to be doing in life, focussing on the idea of “vocation”. How can we decide what we are meant to do? How do we go about achieving this? Who can help us? In a changing labour market, many people now see themselves as likely to have several careers. How does this affect our understanding of vocation? Professor McGrath will explore these questions, and talk about his own career. McGrath originally intended to be a scientist, yet ended up as a Christian theologian with a specialist interest in science. So how did that happen? And how might it help others think about their own future career?

About the speaker

Alister McGrath holds the Andreas Idreos Professorship in Science and Religion at the University of Oxford. Having begun his career as a scientist, he now holds three doctorates form the University of Oxford: a DPhil in Molecular Biophysics, a Doctor of Divinity in Theology, and a Doctor of Letters in Intellectual History. McGrath is particularly noted for his work on the relationship between science and religion.
